How To Become an Online Merchant

Overview

Transaction Network Services (TNS) Internet payment gateway system provides merchants with the ability to efficiently and securely accept and process a variety of online payments from their customers, it provides connectivity over the internet between buyers, sellers and financial institutions.

By using the information outlined in this section, you can achieve an online payment solution in 9 easy steps;

1 Determine which TNS product/solution best suits your business needs
2 Determine which Bank/Financial Institution best suits your business needs
3 Apply for an online merchant facility through the Bank/Financial Institution of your choice
4 Complete a TNS Merchant Registration form
5 Complete and execute a TNS Merchant Agreement
6 Download your Software Development/Start-up Kit
7 Commence your integration (if required)
8 Complete 20 test transactions
9 Go live with your new online payment solution

Before you can begin the fulfilment and integration process you will be required to ensure a merchant facility has been established with a Financial Institution a Bank. To accomplish this, you will need to apply for this facility through the Bank or Financial Institution.

Merchant Agreement with your Bank

Merchant Facility Application Form – (From your bank or Financial Institution)
The merchant facility establishment form is needed so that a Merchant Number and Terminal Id can be allocated by your bank or Financial Institution. TNS cannot lodge this form for you.

Merchant Account with your Bank

Your Merchant Account is made up of Merchant ID/s (CAIC or Bank Merchant Number) and Terminal ID’s which are allocated by the Bank or Financial Institution with whom you have signed a merchant agreement. Merchant ID’s and Terminal ID’s are a crucial component of the payment gateway processing system. A Transaction Network Services facility cannot be established for live credit card processing without them.

Important Note: Not requesting a new merchant facility for online payment processing is a very common mistake made by merchants. Many merchants that are using an Eftpos terminal or IVR often think the merchant facility they already have in place will allow them to process online transactions, unfortunately this is not the case.

It is not unusual for merchant facilities to take up to 6 weeks to be reviewed and approved and the Merchant Number and Terminal ID allocated, so it is important that this is done well before you wish to start live credit card processing.

Card Types

The TNS payment gateway solution can process all major credit cards including:

  • Visa
  • MasterCard
  • American Express
  • Diner Club &
  • JCB

The choice of cards you wish to process is up to you. Cards can be added to the payment gateway solution at any time (provided that merchant facilities for those cards have been established), you will need to notify your Bank or Financial Institutions if you will be accepting Amex, Diners or JCB as they may also need to apply changes to your merchant account.

Merchant ID's and Terminal ID's

Please note that a single Merchant ID and Terminal ID allocated by the bank will allow you to process, Visa and MasterCard. To process American Express, Diners and JCB individual Merchant numbers and Terminal Ids will need to be allocated by each of these financial institutions, meaning that you will also need to apply for a merchant facility from each of these additional entities on a separate basis.

Merchant numbers and Terminal ID’s allocated by the Bank or Financial Institution should be similar to those outlined in the table below. If not please speak to your bank or Financial Institution and request that they be changed.

The allocation of an incorrect Merchant Number and Terminal ID by the Bank or Financial Institution can place delays on your payment solution.

Please ensure that you advise your bank that you will be processing online/internet based credit card transactions and not using a EFTPOS terminal.
